I would highly recommend anyone who has the opportunity to visit or stay aboard QM to do so.
Although her initial conversion in the late 60’s was in some cases poorly thought out, overall just the fact that she still exists somewhat intact today is of huge significance.

They must have gone through an awful lot of brass polish.

Reminds me of a story I heard long ago about a ship that had a beautiful brass binnacle, similar to the one in this picture. At some point they got tired of polishing it, so it was painted over. Then a nw captain came on board, took one look at it and ordered, "Polish it!". It took the deck crew months to scrape every last vestige of paint off of the binnacle, and then to restore the finish until it simply gleamed. After they finished the captain got off and a new captain came on, who took one look at that shining brass binnacle and ordered, "Paint it!".

Why two wheels I wonder? was it in case one helmsman dropped dead? I assume the third one near the engine room telegraph with no binnacle is something different.

Phrontis had highly polished copper pipes on the main compressors - Until one pipe went !BANG! The constant polishing had reduced the wall thickness to almost paper thin!

Lovely picture and interesting recommendation. If those voice tubes and controls could relate the stories of the "Grey Ghost" in WW2! I have had lunch onboard a couple of times and can agree that it is a good venue.

Rgds.

I believe all the bridge equipment was “doubled up” with port and starboard helm positions as well as port and starboard telegraphs as “built-in redundancy”. The sets were alternated with the port set being used one day and the starboard next.
