Coastie - you might have shaved with her this morning - she went to Alang Summer 2005 - a sad end to a great ship, but nice to see new photos of her before the end, still looking modern and up to date after 45 years at sea.

Thank God I use an electric shaver!! Anyway, I remember her laid up from summer 1998. I was passing often in the later years, due to trying to take pics of trains passing near the street.

I was part of the trust that tried to save Windsor Castle and get her brought back to the UK for restoration. The John Latsis company were more than helpful and I feel would have been willing to part with her for little or no money provided we could show a realistic restoration plan for the vessel and that her time as part of the Latsis Group was clearly acknowledged.
We found a berth for her but we were unable to find the necessary patronage that would have enabled us to raise an initial £20m to get her back to UK and some degree of restoration.
She was actually owned by Latsis longer than she was by Union Castle so they had an emotional tie to her as well. But when John Latsis himself died the company became more commercially minded and with the rapidly rising cost of steel her end was inevitable.
Seeing her in thse pictures and my mind goes back to Fridays at 1300 in Southampton. Precise to the second the whistle would blow, the lines let go and another mail ship would sail for the Cape.
Magical Days!
