MacBrayne's first motorship I think (1908, 201grt) Sound of Mull service till 1960. Sold and became Anzio 1 running Southend-Sheerness. 1966 sold for service on Cromarty Firth. Driven ashore in gale on delivery voyage, all hands lost.

Thanks for that superb shot. In fact, there were earlier MacBrayne motorships, as David was the unsung pioneer of that kind of propulsion for short sea vessels. The 'Comet' and the 'Scout' were built in 1905 and 1907 respectively - both with paraffin engines. The 'Lochinvar', which was also paraffin-powered to begin with, weighed in at 188 tons originally. She was modified radically over the years, and eventually almost rebuilt. She was given Gardner heavy-oil diesels in 1926. I knew her well - she was a real curiosity, even in her latter years in the Sound of Mull. Always sailing with a bit of a list, as I recollect - must have been a naughty wee lady in a storm!
