Another shot of Rakaia cadets trying their hand at 'taking soundings' under the watchful eye of our Seamanship Instructor as we transit the canal. A lot better than 'windyhammering' or 'holystoning' the decks I think!
Great photo! Takes me back over 50 years.
Manning the chains must have been a standard thing on all
cadet training ships as we did the same in BI. Wonderful memories!
Pardon the interjection from a dumb R/O but shouldn't he be hanging on to the line with one of his hands? I thought that was the principle of how this happened. Is the line perhaps secured to to the deck near the cadets feet, it appears to be projecting from the platform at 90 degrees?
