Martin I was OS on the rail ferry ARANUI the morning the RANGATIRA arrived from Lyttelton and it was sad to see this fine vessel heading up the harbour for the last time. She was to be the last passenger vessel to operate on the Steamer Express Service which had operated for some 70-80years.

Martin / Emmanuel,

I was third mate in Rangatira for her last two and a half years on the run, and was on board during the last swing. In fact I would have been on board when the photo was taken.

My first trip as second mate in Union Co. was the re-delivery voyage to Falmouth.

Fantastic ship and job (Thumb)

Thanks guys,
John, I never crossed on her so I was gutted when she up and left.My brother went over on a school trip and i was green with envy as only a youngster could be.

To anyone interested in the Cook Strait and its ships key Aramoana into the seaerch box and check out Emmanuel and Dom's photos of a particulary disgusting Cook strait crossing from 1974.

best regards

It is still sad today because we lost something that day. A unique tradition was lost that was the closest thing many of us would have had of ocean voyaging.

3 hours across Cook strait to Picton is not really the same, though I love doing that crossing. Even at the "old " age of 47 I am still taken back to my childhood when heading out into the strait past that reef and headland.

best regards

Martin
