One of four sisters for Fred Bolton's North Yorkshire Shipping Company the "Redcar" is seen anchored in the Mersey on a murky evening. Completed in 1956 she was one of two built by Smith's Dock, the others coming from Lithgows. 10,746 grt, 15,244 dwt, 505'00" x 69'01" x 28'11&qu

I joined the Redcar on 31st. March 1966 at Bidston Dock in Birkenhead The photo shows her in the river Mersey. I thought she was a comfortable ship as a deck hand ( no derreks ), However, a friend of mine who is now 84 was second engineer on her when she was fairly new and he told me the ship was a heap of junk as far as the engines were concerned and it was not a safe ship.
With the exception of three of us who joined her at birkenhead all the deck crew were from glasgow and they were a great group of men.
