Ninja,what a reminder, thanks .
I lived here for weeks at a time while doing courses at the Poplar Tech. College Annexe at Woolwich North.
I used to lie awake at night , listening to the Police sirens wailing- this was BEFORE it became common place in every town in the Country to hear.
The locals were friendly enough but it was a dismal place.
I manged to date the Anchor House receptionist , a pretty young thing from Blackpool , I disliked the the area so much that we would take off on my motorbike in the evenings to get out of the concrete jungle which stretched forever.
Just to the right in the photo was " Ordnance Road ".
I remember the name because I got booked by a young probationer Bobby with his mentor one morning for making an illegal right turn out of it!!
This was before the days of fixed penalty tickets for those offences - everything went to Court & you got a summons.
I had never seen or noticed that bl**dy " No right turn" sign as it was obscured by the branches of a tree. ( & I am sticking to it ..LOL )
I gave the Bobby my ships address in the hope that they would forget the offence .....it was a huge , long address which sounds British , until you get to the end. He wrote it all down and when I uttered the last word - "Singapore", he looked at me in disgust!
I never did get that summons because they couldn't serve it on me!
I will probably be on interpol as " Wanted" .(Jester) Regards,Rick

Images like this do bring back nostalgia, nurses from Whipps Cross Hospital etc, on a boring sunday walk round the docks via Sugar Town, see Hornby Grange moored alongside Z shed (I think that was the correct shed name), would be nice to see it all again, was staying at Anchor House when that gas explosion occured at Ronan Point block of flat opposite and brought down one side of the block. Going up to Leytonstone to visit the motorbike showrooms.

All good fun.

Yes "Z Shed" was the romantic name for the berth, but I have forgotten the number of the Bus Route, but not the fare from Plaistow - 4d

Yes, I stayed here a few times and once for 2 months when posted ashore at the NZSCo dock office at the RAD. They were trying to prime me for a shore job in NZ but I got away in the end in the Piako on the Manz run.

I was "lucky" enough to stay there a few times between ships.
Ordnance Arms across the road, Royal Oak a couple of doors along.
It was always a grin to get in with the mob in the morning for the walk to the early opener, the Chandelier.
There was a big Irish Padre at Anchor House who was pretty hot on grog in rooms. At closing times he always kept an eye on what blokes were taking upstairs. I was invited by a couple of fellow residents one time for a drink in one of their rooms. There was whisky and beer galore.... and a heaving line and bucket in the corner for conveying the goods through the window!
Good times.

Regards, Roy.

Goodness me, we used to go there for "dances" when we were Cadets at Poplar Tech. Also stayed there when I did my Part B, 2nd's EK's and Orals for a few weeks. There was a famous boxing gym just a few door up / down the road from memory. Happy days.
