Does anyone know the Captain Gibson mentioned above. Captain Alistair Gibson was in command of RFA Tidespring in 1966 and had a retirement bash held for him on leaving in December 66. I believe he lived in the Eyemouth area. It can't be the same one, can it?
Thanks Kinnie, but he din't organise the party. It was a definite retirement. The CH/OFF Hamish Jhonston organised the send off. I must have the wrong captain. I have checked my discharge book and it is signed by A.C.Gibson, however maybe the send off was for the guy that he replaced. If anyone can think of who was master of Tidespring in 1966 and retired late that year to somewhere in the borders,(Eyemouth I think) feel free to put me out of my dilemma. Tidespring was in Keppel Harbour for refit when a number of us were flown out to Singapore in January 1966 to join. We left Perth in Western Australia sometime in November and had to in a certain westbound convoy through the Suez Canal in order to be in Rosyth before the 23rd December as thats when the dockyard closed for the Christmas. We had a scare on the way back as the stern gland was leaking somewhat. We radioed ahead and RN divers came out in a gemini with packing material, and on arrival at Aden or Little Aden (can't remember) we had moved all ballast forward so that the prop was as far out the water as possible. The navy divers packed from the water while the Engineers packed from the shaft tunnel. We made Rosyth on the 22nd of December. The photo of the send off is in the mixed section of RFAAPLYMOUTH.ORG. I have tried to post it here but have failed!
