I ran there in 1971/72 on a regular run on the Baltic Viking from Manchester and Liverpool. It was still part of the USSR then, guards on the gangway and a curfew, we had to be back on board by midnight. Not very nice in the winter but it wasn't a bad run ashore, we had a few scams going, chewing gum being one of them.
I was in Riga about that time, Trader. Remember going in the Foreign Currency shop inside the port area and asked the bloke behind the counter about something. He replied in a perfect Hull accent: "I dunnur, am the cook of the Baltic Viking!" He was just watching the store while the locals were out. Gave me a bit of a surprise. Talk about "well in"! Maybe you knew him.
