RMAS ST.MARGARETS A259

RMAS ST.MARGARETS A259 on Carew trot mooring, river Tamar, awaiting disposal, sitting high in the water after de-fuelling, 1985. On 6th February 1986 she was towed to Pounds, Portsmouth by the tug ‘Towing Wizard’ arriving on the 7th.

A shame, I visited Pounds scrap yard when she was with them, they had removed all the brass work and had it stored within a container, a real treasure trove.

Her steering gear was of some historical interest one of only ten ships fitted with it (including Titanic), in that the steam motor was fitted on the tiller rather than the deck. But yes she was razor blade in Italy, she was arrested in Tangiers enroute for non-payment of dues. Liverpool requested the M.o.D for her to be displayed as a museum ship there as she was built in Birkenhead, but MoD insisted she was sold to the highest bidder.
