In January 1958 Blue Star inaugurated a monthly express service with four ships from Queensland ports of Brisbane, Gladstone, Port Alma and Townsville, home to the UK via the Torres Strait. In making Queensland ports their final loading points, rather than ports farther south, a sailing time back to the UK could be reduced to 30 days.
To operate this service the company built two new ships, the "Queensland Star" (1957) and the "Rockhampton Star".
The "Rockhampton Star" made her maiden voyage from London out to Australia early in 1958. She made her first visit to New Zealand in December 1963 when she loaded a cargo of pork for discharge in Sydney and Brisbane.
