ROTTERDAM

I thought this was a great picture. Lots of activity. My only visits were on tankers. Can anyone name this ship and is she on a grain berth?

She is tied up to what used to be called dolfins for some reason, in the river or one of the hafens. The method of discharge was by floating grain elevator which was a common sight in a lot of ports if designated grain berths were unavailable.

Hawkey, any idea of the date? It should help to pin down the identity of the ship which looks possibly like Greek characters.

Thanks to you all,
The card is stamped but not used and it depicts, I presume a younger Queen Frederica or member of their Royal family. It is a 60c stamp and has a date on it of 30.04.80. Dont know however if this is the correct year or a commerative. I also thought it was Greek but then looking at the flag I am not so sure as Tonga says it is red and blue. Maybe Cyrillic script?

I'm fairly sure that this is a Polish built B455 type general cargo ship. According to Comecon Merchant Ships by Ambrose Greenway, 6 were built for Polish Ocean Lines (PLO) and 4 for Czechoslovak Ocean Shipping. These are definately not PLO colours, so I'm inclined to think it's Czech. Trouble is, none of the Czech ships named in the book (Blanik, Sitno, Krivan and Radhost) are remotely like the name on the stern, even allowing for Cyrillic translation.

Phil ,
you were almost there!

It is the "Sitno", built 1969, registered at Praha ( Prague ).

Sold & renamed " Gema Luck " in 1990.
Renamed " New Luck" in 1990.
Sold to Bangladesh breakers & arrived Chittagong 13/12/1992 for demolition.

The negative has been flipped.
If you look at the convoy board above the bridge and read the name backwards.........

DOH Hawkey!!!!!!!

Rick

Well done Rick, it is quite obvious when you look hard enough!!! Not guilty though of reversing the images, thats how the card came.
