photographed passing Gravesend on 24th May 1967 inbound for London was Shaw Savill & Albion's 1949 built RUTHENIC, recently transferred from Royal Lines for whom she was built by Harland & Wolff at Belfast as DURANGO. Later that year, she sailed as SUSSEX for a one way voyage east, arriving

I think she was a sister to the 'DESEADO' - both ships always looked like blocks with no or very little sheer anywhere. Also, from mates ofmine who sailed with them they were hard and heavy ships to work.

I really enjoyed my two trips in the old Durango , I know she was no beauty but we had a great crowd on deck, food and accommadation where very basic but what I would give for one more trip down to South America aboard the old girl
