s.s. Amra

Amra is shown here in her role as a hospital ship during WW2 when she was given the designation Hospital Ship No.41.
Here she is sailing outward from the Clyde just to seaward of the defensive Gantocks/Cloch boom.
In some measure she was under the control of the South African Government, but this unusual visit to the UK may have followed her involvement in the Sicilian and Salerno landings.

My remark about being "in some measure under the control of the South African government" is probably incorrect, the more likely situation being, as I have seen quoted, that the South African government undertook to underwrite the vessel's operational costs as a hospital ship.
