Busy scene during underway replenishment operations, probably photographed from the deck of the USS Hornet (CV-12). The man with the gun at the lower right is preparing to fire a heaving line across to the fleet oiler, which is the USS Sabine (AO-25). The two large pipes behind his back are the muzzles of 40-mm AA guns. The warship in the background is a US heavy cruiser which, unfortunately, I have not been able to specifically identify, but which may be USS Boston (CA-69).
