Silver Quest - Ex. DO 76

Silver Quest - Ex. DO 76

Ex. IOM Scalloper pictured recently at Jubilee Wharf, Penryn, Cornwall.
Note the mock cannons poking out through the steel sheathing on the bulwarks.
When I see old fishing boats "converted" like this I sometimes wonder if the chainsaw is a more dignified end.

What a travesty!
Silver Quest is the slightly larger sister of Ribhinn Donn (57ft v 55ft) built by Alex Noble & Sons in the mid-1960s as ring netters
At least her wheelhouse (original) looks in decent order and one trusts that, when the sheathing added when the vessel was modified for scalloping is eventually stripped away, the current owner seees the value of restoring the vessel's bulwarks
Sent under separate cover is an image of Ribhinn Donn ... one of the original photos taken for Noble when the boat was on her trials off Girvan in 1965.

July 08 ... escaped Aberdeen to West Country and spotted Silver Quest at Penryn ... no improvement since this pic was taken. It beggars belief what can happen to fine vessels. Thankfully, her Noble pedigree still shines through
Off to find some more "ghosts"

I actually quite like this conversion! It's a bit of fun, and the boat is still fairly original under the mock cannons and paint. Prefer this to seeing oversized deckhouses being fitted.

yes, its a bit of fun and, to be fair, these mock ports overlay the bulwarks and are not cut-in, so the vessel's integrity is not impaired
nonetheless, I recall this boat in the IOM and, prior to that, working out of Troon, and she was always kept smart ... green hull, varnished bulwarks and uppers, plus oiled decks
cheers
