Southern Cross

Southampton on 6MAY1969. Checked the 'official list of negatives' the date is the 6MAY1969 not the 3rd when taken at Southampton

Spooky! You flick through the latest pictures and then find this "oldie" tuckedin the middle of a batch! Got my instrutions to join this ship on 7th May 1969 - just 4 days after this photograph was taken - first job after my cadetship with a brand new second mates ticket in my pocket - best 21st Birtday present I could have had. Great 3 trip "experience" in more ways than one. A very very happy ship. God bless her - she has only just gone to the breakers yard!

She was the first actual Liner I'd ever seen, back in 1996 or so in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She' was five or six miles away, but it was easy enough to distinguish her silouhette... I saw 'Norway' later the same week.

I joined Shaw Savill for a few years experience(s) in March 1972. The Southern Cross had gone. However you still could not get away from talk of the Cross. She must have been a great ship. She lasted nearly 50 years I think? Of course there were also continued yarns about the DM - another very much loved SSA liner..

Correction to the date the pic was taken on the 6thMAY1969 not the 3MAY1969 as originally posted. So this pic was taken the day before you joined the ship. WDM (Wayne).

Great view of My favourite ship - photo taken the day after I went home for 5days leave - paid off on 5th and rejoined 9th May - so I assume you must be standby crew! I worked in Purser's Office from 1967-till she finished with Shaw Savill in 1971. She was a wonderful and very happy ship and these few years were the best years of my life. Thanks for sharing this photo - I must share a few of my own - now that she is just a fond memory.

Hi John - do you have any photos taken at the junior officers table - so I may recognise you. I think I have one or two - but I dont think you are in them - if my 'picture' of you is correct.
