used to love these ships, going across the solent on a rough crossing water, ya felt safe strangely!

I worked on these ships for over 12 years, they could take anything that was thrown at them. I do recall, however, it being SO rough at Ryde on the last trip back to Pompey (around 22.10), that I (being on lookout at the bow) actually lashed myself to the jackstaff with a heaving line; I figured that if I was washed overboard in the dark, no-one would even know until I failed to operate the spring rope at Portsmouth. That was in a force TWELVE!
