ss Letchworth ( a Jeep)

ss Letchworth ( a Jeep)

ss Letchworth 2873 G.T.loading esparta grass at Sfax,Tunisia April 1954.

The ss Uskport 2921 G.T. was a similar jeep.

I signed on both but only sailed on the Letchworth.

These jeeps were very utilitarian ships built to sail initially to Mulberry harbour in support of the D day landins.

Max speed was ten knots but with deck cargo of esparta grass it was 8 knots or less. In a strong head wind they went backwards.
