ss Maheno as she was last year - on the beach at Fraser Island. where she has been since 1935.
Built 1905 in Scotland for trans-Tasman passenger service. Served as a hospital ship in WW1. In 1935, under tow from Melbourne to Japan for scrap, she was caught in a cyclone, broke tow and went aground. In WW2 she was used for bombing practice by the RAAF. Fortunately they left a bit.
Public are not allowed on the wreck, but nobody takes any notice of that.
Photo taken 2007 from Fraser Island Airways plane -takes off and lands on the beach near Maheno - cool!
