ss MAHENO

ss MAHENO

ss Maheno as she was last year - on the beach at Fraser Island. where she has been since 1935.

Built 1905 in Scotland for trans-Tasman passenger service. Served as a hospital ship in WW1. In 1935, under tow from Melbourne to Japan for scrap, she was caught in a cyclone, broke tow and went aground. In WW2 she was used for bombing practice by the RAAF. Fortunately they left a bit.

Public are not allowed on the wreck, but nobody takes any notice of that.

Photo taken 2007 from Fraser Island Airways plane -takes off and lands on the beach near Maheno - cool!

Whoops did I? I just put it up because someone posted a photo of Maheno in all her original glory. Delete it if you like.

Na Leave it there, It's the first time I have saw this image. I painted this particular ship 10 years ago for the Hervey Bay City Council, they didn't end up buying the painting so I hung on to it. But it managed to get the front page of the Hervey Bay City council mag, (See Avatar) I will upload the picture one day, Anyway back then it was a bit of a bugger to paint, had to go to the library and photocopy book upon book, these days we have this wonderful website keep up the good work guys Marconi Sahib your images of the old glory passenger ships are excellent,
Regards
Bradley

Notwithstanding the impassioned plea of: “Na Leave it there”, there is not a lot of value in having an exact duplicate; so taking your very reasonable comment, we have copied your extended text from your first (earlier) posting, to this most recent copy and will removed the duplicate.
