EXCELENT SHOT OF THE NEW AUSTRALIA. IT IS HARD TO BELEAVE SHE WAS BUILT AS THE FURNESS BERMUDA LINES MONARCH OF BERMUDA FOR THE BERMUDA RUN. A PART FROM THE STERN SHE LOOKED A COMPLEATLY A NEW BUILDING AFTER THE FIRE AND SHE LOST HER ENCLOSED PROMINARD DECK WHICH WAS NOW OPEN.(Wave) I KNOW SHE WAS BUILT WITH THREE FUNNELS BUT COULD NOT GET USE TO THAT TRIPOD MAST WHERE I SUPOSE THE FIRST FUNNEL WAS AND ALSO THE CARGO CRAIN AT THE FRONT. AT LEAST SHE LASTED TILL 1966 UNDER THE GREEK FLAG AND WENT TO THE BRAKERS AT THE SAME TIME AS HER FORMER RUNNING MATE QUEEN OF BERMUDA.

And people complain about the look of ships today. Well, they weren't always beautiful. Case in point with the New Australia conversion. At least it can be said that she is "interesting".

Thanks for the pic of this unusual ship.

That's odd. Look at the funnel and the 'triple-Bell' steam whistle has been blanked out of the pic.
I remember this in Southampton as the Arkadia.

It was a deliberately utilitarian rebuild carried out by Thornycroft's at Southampton with none of the original superstructure reinstated (post-war steel shortages etc). Instead of going for scrap she was recyled into an effective emigrant liner and had a further successful career with Greek Line. Not bad for a former charred wreck.

Greetings,

And they say that size isn't important....I used to believe that then all my wallpaper fell off (exclam)

It still looks bl**dy big to me to do little more that hold the mainmast light up.

It is, however, a beautiful picture of a very good looking ship.
