SS Red Oak Victory

SS Red Oak Victory

Bow of the SS Red Oak Victory, berthed at pier 6A near the former Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond, California. The ship is currently undergoing restoration by volunteers, and it is hoped that she will soon be able to steam under her own power. She entered service very late in WWII, and was decommissioned in 1946. She served again with civilian companies, and for the US Maritime Service during Korea and Vietnam, and was 'mothballed' from 1968 to 1998. She was brought back home to Richmond in 1998, and has been undergoing restoration ever since. She is named for the city of Red Oak, Iowa which suffered the highest per-capita casualty rate of any American community during World War II.
