Well, from what I remember, it must already have been disconnected. If you have a look at the other picture you will see the anchor on the roller at the back. The buoy has already been hauled on deck and disconnected. The anchor is next on deck as per this picture.
As for distances, can't remember except that we used to pull like hell until we could go no further due to the weight of the chain and then lower the anchor into the water with the buoy attached and lastly let the buoy go. Could be dodgy but most times it was OK.
I used to like anchor handling but was not on one for long. Great winches and the Eng used to drive them.
