That roll again, with that sense of equilibrium/balance that only sail can give you. I feel proud of Scotland when I see where these ships were built. Aye...the Clyde yards produced some fine specimens. Happily, the 'Glenlee' is still with us. Your depiction of canvas is superb....Sigh...wish I could do that! Donald.

Thanks Sis and Deebee. Yes they're supposed to be furling sail, but no these paintings were not painted recently.

You've been holding out on us! I like the freshness about this one. And that change of colour across the sails is just superb.

The composition here though is standard Charles Robert Patterson. (But for the missing identification flags.) Unlike Somerscales who considered himself a straight artist and seldom named his ships, Patterson always portrayed particular ships. http://vallejogallery.com/list.php?artist=Charles+Robert+Patterson+%281878-1958%29&sld=y&artist_id=131 The somewhat fanciful cast shadows would have been slightly more realistic but for the inspiring work of Jack Spurling.
