The detail of the original plate must be a real pleasure to see. What's the purpose of the pipe amidships? I've seen something similar in photos of other vessels of the period. Hope it's less prosaic than external soil drainage.

I guess you are close Rob, I think it is an ash disposal pipe used for dumping the boiler fire ash over board . Charley

Only once you mention it do I realise there must've been a lot of ash to dispose of in the course of a long sea voyage.
