Capt J.G. (Nutty) Almond took her on her maiden voyage late '49 early '50. It was his last voyage in NZS having served in the Company from 1917. He joined after the ship he was in command of was sunk by U boat in the North Sea.
All survived and he was awarded an OBE at the end of the second war for "Bringing his ships safely home throughout hostilities."
Like many others of course and he was always very appreciative of the officers and crews he sailed with. He reckoned they were the finest at sea.
I wonder what he would have thought of the present situation.
