I am puzzled by what appears to be canvas sheeting on the crossbeam of the forward kingposts. Protection for/against something I would guess?

I guess they needed all those men, it was manual work most of it as it looks. Regards, Stein.

I bought a postcard for my BF collection which, undoubtedly, was based on this photograph! Nice picture.

Thanks for the correction Dom, they are masts, not kingposts. (Thumb)

Dom, she was sunk at Singapore in early February 1942, then raised by the Japanese and renamed.
The 'Taruyasu Maru' hit a mine and sank off Sado Island on June 30, 1945.
She was raised by the British in 1947, repaired at Hong Kong and renamed 'Empire Evenlode'.

As she had accommodation for 600 steerage class passengers, I have moved the photo to the Passenger Liners thread

Accommodation” is perhaps an exaggeration Jim. Licensed to carry 600 steerage class passengers is probably more accurate. They were stuffed onto the tween-deck. I am sure that the poor souls did not want repeat the experience.
