I wonder what the curious structure in front of her bridge is. Perhaps it could be a lift installed when she served as a hospital ship ?

In early photos of her it doesn't feature.There are photos of her as a hospital ship with the structure in place. Also photos post war in KJCPL livery with it missing.

If a lift, it would appear only to serve platforms reached by open stairways.
How about a ventilation duct - perhaps with air conditioning equipment?
