Magga Dan
The very first ship I was interested in.
She appeared in the National Geographic in 1950 something, in articles about the ''International Geophysical Year'' I remember the Kista? Dan as well
Hi fbg
Lovely pic of the the two grand old ladies together. I sailed on the THALA DAN in 1980 after she had the extra deck put on which made her roll something terrible!!
The MAGGA DAN also fascinated me. Was it her that got lost in the ice when she and all the ''Dan Boats'' were then painted white, which, when found resulted in them all being painted red to make them easier to spot in Polar regions?
When you think about it, it makes sense!
Regards from Aussie

Jeff, I seem to remember that story about the Magga Dan, she was missing for several days, but was found with the help of aircraft and as you say the fleet was all repainted red. That story was on the news and in the papers.

The name Magga Dan rang bells back my youth for me. I cannot find anything saying sh was originally painted white but I have found this one of one of her sisters, Kista Dan, in white, have a look HERE
There is also a bit of film HERE showing her breaking the ice in the Antarctic.
There is also a picture of her HERE under the gas axe at the West Buitenhaven, Terneuzen, underway to the breakers yard in Ghent.
