The Fat Man

As an experiment. The Hiroshima bomb ('Little Boy') used enriched uranium. 'Fat Man' used plutonium. It exploded over a civilian area taking out Nagasaki Prison, Mitsubishi Hospital, Nagasaki Medical College, Chinzei High School, Shiroyama School, Urakami Cathedral, Blind and Dumb School, Yamazato School, Nagasaki University Hospital, Mitsubishi Boys’ School, Nagasaki Tuberculosis Clinic, Keiho Boys’ High School. President Truman wasn't told about the plan to bomb Nagasaki. The Secretary of Commerce, Henry Wallace, reported in his journal that “the thought of wiping out another 100,000 people was too horrible” for the President. “He didn’t like the idea of killing, as he said, ‘all those kids,’ ”

Quite, Eddyw. I have seen the "dummy" in the museum at West Point, New York. I was the guest of Capt. (Rtd.) Richard "Dick" Rohrbacher, class of 1962 and trained as a Ranger, Otto "Doc" Appleton (who's 50th wedding celebration it was) and Bob Chabot (Army football coach). We got the run of the whole of the camp, a great experience! At the time, I spent my summers as a senior counsellor at their sports camp in Great Stockbridge, Massachusettes.

The museum also serves a function as a "Nuclear Shelter', lots of automatic bomb doors. I was also very interested in the Vietnam War exhibition, as Dick had given me a brief that he had received as a graduating Cadet regarding the proposed "Hearts & Minds" campaign.

I saw a cartoon by Danish cartoonist Storm Pedersen, showing people running for an air raid shelter. With one man saying: It is strange - we humans invented the flying-machine, so now we have to hide down under the earth because of it.
