Tilbury landing stage was opened on 16th May 1930 by Prime Minister J.Ramsey MacDonald.
Mongolia then berthed and embarked passengers
for Australia.

Looks like it might be the 1923-built MONGOLIA but the photo must have been taken in the 1930s. The Landing Stage was opened in 1930 (by Prime Minister J Ramsay MacDonald).

Must have been a very special occasion with the tugs dressed overall, as well as the ship. Signalman.

Agree with MONGOLIA.Head tug looks like Watkins KENIA (1927) with original mainmast. Could be the opening of the Landing Stage?

It was indeed the opening of Tilbury Landing Stage on 16th May, 1930. The ceremony ended with the arrival of the P& O liner MONGOLIA which embarked passengers bound for Australia.

This photo was a framed picture on the wall of Gravesend Central library
a few years ago - there was no caption with it.
