CentrePort have two tugs of this class the other is the NGAHUE. Prior to the arrival of the TIAKI they had three, the third and first of the class was the KUPE which is now operating at Port Taranaki, New Plymouth. All three were built in New Zealand. KUPE was built as a result of the WAHINE disaster (today being 42 years since she foundered)- the Court being critical of the lack of a powerful habour tug being available at the time of the disaster.
Doubtless the Court could also say in detail what a powerful tug could have done in that location in the conditions prevailing at the time!
If I might have the temerity to suggest I would say that she too would have been struggling to survive never mind assist the Wahine.......
