You are correct Shell built two bulk carriers Tribulus and Tricula in 1981, and purchased two OBO'S around the same time, no doubt to try and earn some quick cash with so many L class laid up.

TORRENS,

I think i was on her around the time of this pic 1988-89. Captain Mike Geddis, one of the better Joe Shell Captains, came from Ayrshire i think and loved building model boats.
We did regular runs between Vancouver and Japan on the Tribulus. But we went on a warm weather run to get some of the bubbling rust chipped off: Iron Ore run Koolan Island (Aus) to Japan. Then later did Vancouver to Tubarao Brazil where i paid off. Only a few months later she got into trouble in North Atlantic and limped into Bantry Bay Ireland.
The story on these two ships, was that they were given to shell by the Koreans as a payment for what i don't know. Apparently, Shell did not specifically order them. They also had another bulk carrier the Tectus, but that was sold off and the Tribulus and Tricula carried on for a few years more
