Thanks for posting this Jen - memories for me.
I was at Trieste in October 1946 in Dallington Court.
Many ships were sunk in the harbour including the
liner Rex.
A huge statue of Mussolini had been on one of those
hills and I saw it after it had been toppled.
There was a curfew to 11pm as Italians and Yugoslavs
were in dispute over control of the city and port.
