U-48 deck gun on display

U-48 deck gun on display

On the morning of 28 November 1917, three drifters from Ramsgate came across the German submarine U-48, on the surface, recharging her batteries. In attempting to outrun the drifters, the U-boat captain stranded his vessel on the Goodwin Sands. The vessel soon became a wreck on the sandbank, and the 8.8cm gun was salvaged before she was swallowed by the sandbank. The gun stood on display in Nelson Crescent, Ramsgate, until it was removed in the 1960s.
