A punt here. This looks like a possible Frederiksstad ship. Given the V on the funnel the only thing I can come up with for vessels like this is Vivaldi & Giacomini. Try Valtellina ex-Torfinn Jarl of 1922:

Both these vessels were renamed in 1950, not 1948. But that photo of Torfinn Jarl isn't a bad match.

David, I reckon you are quite right, it looks like a "Y" shaped bridle funnel stay.

I seem to have seen some Clark and Chapman vessel looking like this.

thanks for TORNI she certainly looks exactly like the ship in the dock even down to the vents on top of the derrick posts. Also it looks like there is some hull damage similar to that being repaired so maybe its a common area for damage in this ship
