Away from home so no books or ref library but something jolts the memory that this is HMS/HMCS Magnificent

Flight deck letter D = Colossus. Became French Arromanches in 1946.

Colossus? wasn't this the one that was on eBay a couple of years back?

Apparently, Collossus, as Arromanches, was scrapped at Toulon in 1978, which would pre-date ebay by a few years.
According to World Aircraft Carriers List, Colossus was "C" then "J".

Isn't the "deck letter" usually at the other end?

No Steve - both ends, presumably to provide recognition for aircraft approaching from all directions.

That's the correct answer for the carrier. So who is going to identify her escort?
