Unknown ship
Unknown ship at Port Antonio, W. Indies. Stamped and dated
March 15, 1909, Kingston Jamaica. Could be an early United Fruit Co ship? Was that company in existence in 1909?

Hi
My old Talbot-Booth says they were 'steamship owners since 1900'. The funnel colours are correct, even considering this is a tinted black and white image. She even appears to have open side doors. Further snuffling reveals the only United fruit vessels built before 1909 were :- ADMIRAL FARRAGUT, ADMIRAL DEWEY, ADMIRAL SAMPSON and ADMIRAL SCHLEY of 1899 : VENUS of 1903 : SAN ESPARTA, SAN JOSE and SAN LIMON of 1904.
They had some vessels built in 1909, but these were 5000 tonners, which this little beauty obviously is not ! I hope this narrows it down a bit....maybe if any photos of these appear we might get a bit further !

Graham, thanks for the research. Being a colour-added photo, it's impossible to see the name. I could have cropped it more, but I liked the addition of the rower in the dinghy. Talbot-Booth to the rescue on several occasions.

Brent,
Sorry, but I only saw this post. There were about 121 United Fruit steamships in service before 1909. That is not counting E&F Boats. Most of the vessels were Norwegian, and part of what was known as "The Mosquito Fleet". You should be able to see the flag aft, and that would also help identify her. I have looked through my scans of pix I have for those Mosquitos, and am of the opinion the ship is HIPPOLYTE DUMOIS-1902. If correct these are some of the particulars for her.
Hippolyte Dumois 1902
