Unknown vessel now called KOSSOU

Ahoy,
One of our members[jangoud] has send me this photo, which is called KASSOU, but he hisn't sure about it; his thoughts were also KASSEL.The photo was taken before 1976 in the Vlaardingen area. I believe it could be the KASSOS, anyone has an idea?

I think its the Kassos owned by a London Greek Company called Rethymis and Kulukundis built circa 1939. The 2 families set up Buisiness in London both being from the Island of Kassos in Greece. There was also a Swiss named vessel with same name from same era but doubt its her. A ex Bank Line Vessel Elveric renamed Kassos but that was 1919.

I definitely don't think she was of pre-war construction, look at the raised winch tables etc. I took some British outfits till the sixties to get with that idea. I would go with the 1956 theory.

The only other Kassos showing on our computer is a Greek Ferry. The Kassel is showing as a NYK Car Carrier and Kassou a popular name for pleasure boats. The picture is black and white but R and K has 3 bands on funnel. Will keep on looking

Ahoy Ruud & Gdynia,
I have checked Lloyds Indexes from 1971 to 1976.

The " Kassos", of 1956 is listed & amazingly I have noted by her name that I saw her at Dubai in 1976 with a mystery comment which reads " Skin".
Unfortunately I can't read my own scribble ! but I think it refers to her being a reefer.

There is a " Kassel", Greek owned & which is ex Hamburg Amerika Linie, 5,583 g.t

There is no " Kassou" at all.

I have found a great photo of the " Kassel" and it is definitley NOT her , see http://www.biedekarken.de/kassel.htm

So, I am pretty sure she is the 1956 built vessel.

Uddevallavarvet, Uddevalla, Sweden. ( yard no. unknown)
3,281 g.t. ( as built ). 3,500 dwt.
10 Cylinder Götaverken.

as the "Aase Thorden " to 1958.
"Frubel Julia" to 1966.

Sold by Criomar Inc., Greece to Greek shipbreakers and arrived Eleusis early in April 1982 from Chalkis where she had been laid up since 31/01/1979.

So, the Greeks got more work out of her than her previous two owners!

Ahoy Bruce,
well, back to the drawing board for the moment !
Your link sure looks like a Reefer where as the photo above sure don't!
I'll look further tomorrow.

Hello Patalavaca---
I didn't mean to blow your theory away. It does look like a reefer and they are most certainly two different ships.
Could there be two of the same name?
To be continued...............

Ruud.. a good one for the quiz forum...
Radar/mast and other mentioned features point to a post-war built ship.
R&K and London Overseas cousin, Mavreleon ships generally had the same funnel markings. Red star on a blue and white band.
The fact that there are no funnel or bow markings possibly mean non-Greek owned.
