This is a detail from a photo I've posted on another site, and fortunately the only ship identified was the coaster !

LR 1945 has a "Joao Jose Secundo" (1928, 263 grt), ex sailing vessel built 1928 converted 1939 to mv, Portuguese owners, which may be a candidate.

Thanks, Graham, "Joao Jose Primeiro" was my guess, too.
By the way, to the left of the postcard (not posted by you or Yvon) is the tug "Phosphate No. 4".

Can anyone see the name of the freighter astern, is it "Eastern..." something. Also has the name of the Line on the side but I can't quite make it out.

Looks like "Montship Lines" for the Fort/Park type at the quay. If this is taken in the 50s I'm left with (I THINK) just the following 4 possibles: Mont Gaspe (Gaspesian Park), Mont Alta (Sunalta Park), Mont Clair (Portland Park), Mont Sandra (Alexandra Park).

The Eastern ship I've looked at too. From my database she has to be either Pearl or Pride. Looks more like Pride to me and the tonnage (5444) indicates this too over Pearl (1350). This means the photo was taken not later than 1951 when Eastern Pride became Higashi Maru

Comparing with this picture of "Eastern Pride" as "Diamond Head" it's another ship:

Yes now that you say it, the 2nd word certainly looks like 'Guide', so 'Eastern Guide' most probably.
Thanks

The original photo is posted now on http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/981106/title/casablanca/cat/532.
The date is after WWII as a C1-M-AV1 (Taurus ?) is visible on the original view.
Thanks for your comments.
