USS Truxtun 1993/1994

I think this is the USS Truxtun. Can someone provide a positive id? Photo taken from Fort Island as she was departing Port Philip Bay. As a scout group we were camped on the island and had arranged to exchange signals with her as she left

You're right Jeff, thats the USS Truxton (CGN-35). She decomissioned soon after in 1995.

This vessel bore the brunt of many New Zealander's and the trade union movement which led to the eventual ban of nuclear armed or powered vessels from New Zealand waters during the 1980s, a policy which still stands today - something most New Zealander's are proud of.

Emmanuel, we get a bit envious across the way that NZ can clearly make strong and positive statements and actions about their sovereign rights and values but at the same time not seek to turn their back on "friends" and alliances. It is something that many of our Oz politicians do not understand. I had forgotten the nuclear history of the Truxtun. If it is of interest we had the scouts up at 5.00 am to engage in a pre arranged signal exchange with the Truxtun - but they did not acknowledge our presence. Jeff

That brings back some memories for me Emmanuel.
I spent a wet weekend at the gates of the Inter Islander Wharf in September 1976 when that thing came in.
