as I was living there 40 years later, during 2001/3, although the ships had changed, I can easily imagine the scene

Hello Malcolm - Thanks for your comment. Yes, all the Marseilles photos I took myself when I arrived there after sailing from the Eastern Med aboard the SS Jerusalem and whilst awaiting the arrival of the SS Istanbul to take me on to Barcelona in the summer of 1962. It was part of an extensive and lengthy tour that took myself and a friend back to the UK after three years in Cyprus. Marseilles was certainly a 'lively' city at the time and the port was full both of ships and character. Derek

The "Paquebot mixte" in the background is Either Tahitien or Caledonien , Messageries maritimes . Photograph taken near or facing the Cap Janet passenger terminal , which also was the Messageries terminal in Marseilles.
