Sailed on her in 72/73 , she had loads of trouble when discharging, the side ballast tanks were always being punctured by the crane grabs,we had a standby welding crew ready to patch her up , what a carry on , but still a nice ship to serve on.

I remember this one from February 1975 at Portland terminal 4. I recall the CE was from Wales, and a fellow named Terry (3rd mate?) who was engaged at the time, arranged some stamp-trading for me with his soon-to-be mother-in-law.

I also sailed on Victore in the mid-70s - Immingham to Murmansk, better than it sounds.

Never realised she wound up on the US West Coast, Tunatown. Very unusual. Was Terry by any chance from the Brighton area?

Terry's mother-in-law wrote from Southwick, in Sussex. The second letter she wrote in late 1975 mentions that Terry and Julia were married September 27, and were then in the Persian Gulf enroute to Japan, no ship name mentioned, so I don't know if he left the Victore for the wedding, or did a quick jump ashore for the ceremony. The only other letter from her that I can find is from March 1978, she mentions that Terry is only three weeks away from his 1st mate exams, and mentions a one-year-old daughter named Clair. Hope this lines up with what you remember.

The mid seventies this vessel had the record for being the largest ship to enter Hartlepool, until broken by the Kiwi Arrow in 1975.

I sailed on the MV Victore as the electrical officer 1974 to 1975 I remember Terry Edwards from The Brighton area also the 4th engineer Derek Wilby the radio officer was from Cleethorpes Tyron. We had two trips to Murmansk from Immingham and then a trip through the Panama Canal to LongBeach San Francisco Portland and Vancouver with a cargo of steel. In San Francisco we hired a Ford car for the week we were there. The return trip from Vancouver was too Swansea delivering coal!

Well, I've heard of carrying coals to Newcastle...

VICTORE's bell is now hanging outside the "Six churches" at Panagia village at Kasos island in the Aegean. Probably put in her new use by a Kassian member of her crew. Mavroleon family used to hire crew from their place of origin, Kasos.
