I believe all the old SSA "Wai" boats were happy ships - perhaps with exception of the "Mutiny" on Waiwera in the very early 60's. I think the Engine Room teams had great camraderie - especially with so many scavenge fires etc.

Oh happy days,I was second officer of this grand lady from September 59 until October 60. I left her in Antwerp undergoing repairs after a collision in the river on the way up to the river berths to commence loading for Australia. The ships that tried to demolish our port side was the German M.V. "Erlangen" which was outward from the river berths & failed to make the bend so ending up ploughing down the port side. She was a very happy ship throught the time I was in her .

From my experience the Waipawa was the happiest ship I sailed on. What we got up to could fill a book.

Was it the Wairangi that broke her back after going aground while entering harbour. There was a story going around the pilot used the command Larboard and the helsman thought he meant starboard.
