Agree with you John ...... you, if anyone, would know if the Walsh Bay berths in the "good old days" were the domain of Blue Funnel services of those days? There's a photo in the gallery of the old Bluey "Dymas", just on the west side of the bridge, taken from either Dawes Point or one of the Walsh Bay wharves and it looks as if she might be preparing to berth - at one of the Walsh Bay piers? I'm pretty sure that Blue Flu did use Walsh Bay but can you confirm?
My last few years at sea were spent in the far east & USA with the odd trip to W.A on a bulkie. Came back here in the early 70's and from what I remember you are correct - most Blue Funnel went to Walsh Bay or W'Loo. Shaw Saville were Darling Harbour (Millers Point) and BI Pyrmont. As far as I remember there were not that many blue flu ships calling here except for the odd round the world job and the apple ships that went to Tassie.
Interesting picture. At first glance it still looks like commercial berths - minus cranes and ships - but I take it the "Quay Wharehouses/Sheds" are infact modern hotels?
Mike,
Yes Blue Funnel used the western wharves just out of sight on rhs of pic.
There was a 'corner' wharf, parallel to the shore at the extreme w. end of Walsh Bay, which 'turned the corner ' at Dawes Point and became Darling Harbor, to the South.
Both Shaw Savill and Blue Funnel used these wharves all the time till the very end.
I can remember seeing the "New Australia" at #11 for years, regularly.
The "Dominion Monarch" usually tied up in Darling Harbor as I recall, sometimes at #11.
