I was just a twinkle in the old eyes when this photo was taken.How things have changed since then. When I was at sea in the sixties I would come in from the Hutt Valley by train and Aotea Quay was always full with ships from NZS,SS&A to say a few of the companies.
I wonder if the memorial gates that were set up for all the American GIs that left here for the Pacific are still at the end of the wharf.

Unfortunately not, it was removed some time ago and I'm not sure where it's been stored - pos, Wellington Port Co or Wellington City Archives. It's a real shame as that was an important memorial given alot of the servicemen who left from Aotea Quay did not survive the war - Another example of people making decisions with no sense of history.
