If ready made packing for the gauge glasses was not available the gauge glass glands were packed by hand using a small copper packing tool and blue asbestos which came in tins, the tool was used to pack the asbestos strands into the gland which was then pushed down with the packing follower and gland nut. There were no suitable gloves available (only Surgeons had them!!) to carry out this work with blue asbestos and the finger tips had to be used. As you will gather I have carried out this task in the past.
