Westmorland retro Pub Sign

I painted this retro pub sign a couple of months ago for my Cousin Jason Groombridge who had sailed in the Westmorland for a year, near the end of her time in the late 70's. I have been promising to do it for long time, so having some time off after an operation I got stuck in. Its not brilliant and I am not an artist by a long shot and I have taken some artistic license with the way she looks, but in the end managed to get a reasonable shape, the Hallen Derricks were a bit awkward to get right compared to drawing normal Sampson posts. The sign writing was easier as I am self taught and ran my own business for 5 years after leaving the sea. I used sign-writers enamels for the whole project finished of with two coats of gloss yacht varnish.

Hi A. D.

Its to go in his garden patio, have done several over the years for friends and family on different subjects, make good talking points at summer Bar b q's.
Yes the spelling had me worried at first lol, but checked a couple of editions of my old "Ocean Ships" of the period to make sure had got it right, and just checked again lol.

Best Regards

I have the painting in pride of place in the living room next to the photo of my Mum, Lorraine's not very happy but I,m sure it will grow on her :-( . This painting really does bring back fantastic memories of my time on the Westmorland and friends I gained on her and espeicially my late ship mate Ray King. Thank you Yuge.

Hi Stumps,

Thanks for the comment, I know she always looked nice and was a popular ship in her day with both company and Pool men, but did not really notice how square she was in design untill I tried drawing her, threw many sketches away after hours of failed attempts and decided to go straight in with the paint lol. The photos do not really do it justice as it is a big sign 24" by 36" and the varnish gives it great depth.

Jason I am glad you are pleased with it, I bet Lorraine is happy with you, with it stuck on the wall, am sure it will look better in next years summer sun out in the garden with a cold Guinness in your hand. Oh well better start Roy's one of the Lagos Palm as you got yours before him.

Best Regards

Yuge
