Westmorland

Westmorland at Tauranga (correction - Dunedin) 1972, painted in the proper manner. Look at the shine on that funnel.

Ah yes, when there was the tradition of doing it right the first time. Great ships, great company. A credit to the crews of that time.

Geoff - This is taken from the same berth as below and James C seemed to agree with my guess of Tauranga but I stand to be corrected.

Perhaps Victoria Wharf in Dunedin. Certainly no wharf cranes in Tauranga.
Great shot though, she looks really good!

You are right, checked my log book and we never went to Tauranga during the 5 trips I was aboard. For some reason I wrote Tauranga on the slide.I agree this must be Dunedin, where we stayed for 3 weeks. (Those were the days!)

Great class of ships - the "T" class, sailed on Tonagplonk and Taupo. Happy days indeed.

I was on this one when she did Owners Trials on the measured mile at Arran.
The odd one out as she had a Winterthur Sulzer.
Stunning funnel but methinks Blue Star had the edge on funnels.
When she became the Fares(spell?) Reefer and managed by Common Brothers, the Engineers built a control room whilst at anchor outside Bandar Abbas.
Taupo and Tekoa where also there as Mandama and Mahsuri of Austasia Lines Singapore.

Chequered start- the name was spelt wrong (WestMORE-land) briefly, then there was a gangway collapse at the fitting out quay thankfully without casualties and her "maiden" voyage was in a fierce gale off the quayside.
