Lads,
Last night, I watched the Winsome at the seine net in a video I have. Although I have watched it before, it just dawned on me that she shoots the starboard side ropes first then the port ropes. All the seine nets boats I have seen shot their port side ropes first. Why would this be? Does it matter? Being more of a trawl man than the seine net I would be interested to hearing peoples experiences/views on this....
Cheers TD
As you would know, most of the Lossie boats, shot away ower the port side first, then, shot awa the net, then the starboard ropes. When they started heaving back it was aye the starboard side,as the gilson was on the starboard side. Noo the boat wi twa gilsons, could heave back on either side, or if the boat was unlucky enough, tae break a gilson when taking a lift aboard, you had a spare. Mind you, some of the other INS boats, preferred to lift ower the Port side as you can see in that photo o' the Sapphire, I posted today.
Aye, I noticed that in your picture right enough. In the video, Winsome takes her haul aboard portside too. We always worked starboard side but there was occasions when we had to use our port ponds in heavy fishing. As for starboard working I have heard every reason fae religion through 'it's easier 'cos maist fowk are richt haunded' through to rotation of propellor......lol!
Most seine net boats that I have been aboard shot the starboard side first. I always thought it had to do with the way the three strands of the ropes were woven, meaning when you went round with your bight one way they believed it loosened the weave and tightened it the other way. Can't remember where I got that from or even if it makes sense or just a false belief/superstition but I was told that by someone at one time.
As a wee aside....I just love this picture....I used to draw wee shippies like her on my school books. Just the same type of Miller's boatie, just a young lads dream. lol
You had an INS invasion in the hoose yesterday, wouldna mind being there, listening tae that crack LOL Georgie, fa telt yi that story, the wey the rope is weaved wouldna make ony difference.
PS Jake, is the green thing gan tae speak????(Cloud)(EEK)(==D)(LOL)
